Software Development

Work with our software developers to build and ship software in a continuous delivery environment, where we ship code to production many times a day. Come pair up with a mentor, collaborate on solving problems with other developers, and play an active role in shaping our product and our culture. Some of our current technologies include iOS, Android, Scala, Akka, Play framework, Go, Javascript (React.js and Flux), HTML/CSS, MongoDB, MySQL, and more.

This is what Noah Tajwar – a high-school student on our Android team – has to say about working at Hootsuite. Noah is coming back for another summer of code at Hootsuite in 2016.

“In my time at Hootsuite, I felt like I was really able to contribute to my team. By the end of the first week, I had submitted my first code – a feature that allowed users to quote a tweet on Android. By the end of my term, I was able to expand this feature by adding the ability to view quoted tweets in streams, details views and the publisher. Once it was done and pushed to production, I could even see how it impacted users in the real world. Over the entire two months I was given the opportunity to tackle more and more challenging tasks and I got extensive practice with these new technologies and the entire process of the development cycle.” Noah Tajwar.

This is what Emmanuel Sales – a high-school student on our Build & Deploy team – had to say about working at Hootsuite last summer. Emmanuel is coming back to work with Hootsuite again this summer too, but this time as a university student.

“Hootsuite has given me opportunities to grow and learn as a developer that I have never had before. I’ve learned so much about Scala, functional programming, microservices, and complex build and deploy ecosystems. Along with the technologies, I learned about the fundamental practices of working on software in a team, like the Agile methodology and our process of code review.” – Emmanuel Sales

Operations Development

Our operations engineers to build and maintain the systems infrastructure, servers, and networks that power our mission-critical social media applications. Put another way, your code may not end up on the homepage, but your team loves you because you make everything “just work”. Our current technical stack and tool chain includes Consul, Terraform, Nginx, MySQL, MongoDB, Sensu, Graphite, PagerDuty, Redis, Memcached and many others. We build tools with Python, Bash, and Perl.

“Working for the Ops Team at Hootsuite I get to work on methods to maintain Hootsuite’s infrastructure. It’s the biggest responsibility I have had over the years working for various tech companies. It has taught me how to think bigger and foresee problems.

I think what makes Hootsuite awesome are the people here. They are amazing, talented, and really friendly. It’s a fun environment to work in and everyone has trust in each other to do the right thing.” – Mishra, 2014 Co-op & now full-time Operations Developer

Security

Our security team ensures the security of Hootsuite’s data and environment, along with building the integration of security into the fabric of our company. You’ll be be working to ensure our suite of applications and services stay safe and secure by mitigating attacks, detecting threats, and fixing vulnerabilities.

“My mentors spent a lot of time training me with penetration testing tools/processes and system administration. They gave me a lot of options, trust and autonomy to improve Hootsuite’s security operations. Besides the technical aspect of security, they also showed me the GRC side of security. They provided a lot of inspiration and gave me a lot of advice on how to further my career in information security.”Andy Leung, Co-op Security Developer 2015

Our technology includes Apple, Dell, VoIP, AD, Okta, VMWare, Meraki, multiple SaaS solutions, and Google Apps to highlight a few.

“I used to think that being in IT is about being a hardware engineer, but once I started my co-op, I realized that there is a great deal of diversity within the IT department. There are a variety of opportunities and positions: helpdesk, support, purchaser, system administrators, and technicians.”Shameen Gill – Co-op IT 2015.
